Water Purification

Why is Water Purification Important?

Water purification is a very important process for our daily lives in order for overall good health & wellbeing. Almost 70% of our body is made up of water, so it is very important to consume safe and clean water on a daily basis. Understanding the municipal water suppliers which are responsible for
providing clean and safe potable water to our homes, schools and businesses include a process of adding a number of chemicals to reduce the number of contaminants within the water before it reaches our faucets. These are to combat: parasites, bacteria, algae, viruses, and fungi.

Understanding What is in Our Water

Since it is nearly impossible to examine water quality simply on the basis of appearance, multiple processes, such as physical, chemical, or biological analyses, have been developed to test contamination levels. Levels of organic and inorganic chemicals such as: Arsenic, Lead, Chloride, Fluoride, Copper, Manganese, Zinc, Sulfates. Rust and Radon can be found in municipal water supplies which if
consumed unfiltered, can lead to potentially serious health risks if consumed over a period of time. Odour, colour, and taste, are some of the common parameters used to assess water quality and contamination levels but overall the ownership and responsibility in purifying water as it enters our buildings is up to the end user / consumer.

Chlorine and it's Effect on the Human Body

Chlorine is the #1 contaminant in unfiltered drinking water
using unfiltered tap water when cooking has a negative effect on food quality
Chlorine can be ingested from the lungs or absorbed from the skin when showering
chloramines hover just above the water of a pool and are inhaled when a swimmer takes a breath

Drinking

Drinking water containing chlorine will not hurt you immediately, but it may have long-term health effects. Chlorine is the #1 contaminant in drinking water. While the chemical is added as a means to sanitise water and kill off microorganisms and other waterborne pathogens, it has several harmful effects as well. Unfortunately, chlorine treatment does not guarantee the drinking water coming out of a faucet
is free from unhealthy microorganisms. Apart from its health risks, chlorine contaminated water is a primary cause of odor and bad taste in drinking water. The unpleasant taste may cause your children to opt for less healthful beverages to hydrate and refresh themselves, such as teas, soft drinks and other sweetened drinks that are detrimental for their health.

Cooking

Aside from the health implications of cooking with contaminated water, using water straight from the tap also has a negative effect on food quality and presentation. For instance, chlorine, rust, and other mineral deposits can be absorbed into meat and vegetables during the cooking process, affecting taste and texture. Water quality also has a big impact
on the taste of your drinks, particularly when it comes to beverages like coffee, lemonade, and hot cocoa. Likewise, chlorine can bleach vegetables while they cook so that they look dull instead of vibrant. Even Chefs with remarkable skill may have a hard time getting their food to look and taste a certain way when using contaminated water.

Bathing, Showering & Washing

Chlorine ingested from the lungs or absorbed from the skin during a 15-minute shower can be much more hazardous than drinking chlorine contaminated water. The heat and steam can cause chlorine to evaporate, leading to the creation of chlorine gas that can be inhaled. Additionally, chlorine can be absorbed through the skin, resulting in skin irritation, dryness, and the potential exacerbation of skin conditions like eczema. These effects can be particularly troublesome for individuals with sensitive skin or allergies. By reducing our exposure to chlorine and other harmful chemicals in shower water, we can enhance our skin and respiratory health, as well as potentially lower the risk of other health issues associated with these chemicals.

Swimming

When pool chemicals mix with other chemicals in the water, like ammonia in urine, sunscreen, shampoo, lotion, deodorant, and other products, they can create a reaction. This reaction releases volatile organic compounds (VOC's) known as chloramines, which can be harmful to breathe. The chlorine smell you associate with an indoor swimming pool? It’s actually the result of chloramines, which can turn into gas fumes in the air. Since chloramines hover just above the water of a pool, they are almost always inhaled when a swimmer takes a breath. In outdoor pools, the VOC’s tend to blow away. However, indoor pools with a strong chlorine smell - are less likely to have enough ventilation.

Benefits of Adopting Water Purification Technology

There are a variety of commercial and home grade water purification systems available depending on budget and scale. We know the municipal water suppliers provide water to our homes and businesses which have chemicals to eliminate pathogens and viruses. Our responsibility from there is to filter, purify and remineralise our drinking and bathing water for improved health and wellbeing outcomes. To summarise the most prominent health advantages of installing a Water Purification system include:
  • No harmful contaminants
  • Retained minerals
  • Aids digestion
  • Better absorption | hydration
  • Improved metabolism
  • Reduced skin, scalp and eye irritation
  • Healthier hair
  • Elimination of toxins
  • More energy
  • Removes harmful chemicals
  • Healthier food preparation & cooking
  • Promotes health & wellbeing

“Water is the elixir of life as we know it. But not all water! Before consuming any water we need to ensure it is completely purified and safe to drink, cook with, bath and swim in”
