Water Conservation

Water Conservation

The goal of creating a water management plan is to reduce water consumption. Key to success will be conducting thorough assessments of current conditions, including a fixture audit to determine the rate or volume of water used. Recommended assessments gathering the answers to the preliminary assessment questions below can help
determine how far along your school campus is inimplementing a water management plan. This isnot an exhaustive list, but it does provide a goodstarting point in implementing a Water management strategy to gather critical information to create a Water consumption baseline.

Water Saving Strategy Benefits

Identifying Water wastage through applied water auditing
Improved utility functions and grounds maintenance
Reduced reliance on utility providers via water harvesting
Gathering critical information creating a Water consumption baseline to reduse Water usage
In many cases depending on geographic locationand localised weather precipitation patterns of aschool, Water scarcity is an increasingly importantarea of focus. From sports field’s irrigation toutility functions and grounds maintenance,
managing water is a vital part of campusoperations. Being self-sufficient in this area byharvesting and capturing rainfall from buildingroofs with large storage tanks is the ideal endscenario to reduce reliance on utility providers.

Water Audit & Strategy

The obvious benefit of implementing methods of water conservation is the reduced amount of water used. A school which has installed water efficient toilets with a flush rate of 4.85 litres per flush and faucets with a flow rate of 1.9 litres per minute, both of which go beyond the flush and flow requirements set by building code. Combined with rain and grey water harvesting, a school has the potential to achieve a substantial water saving if all measures are applied.
1) Conduct a fixture audit to determine numbersof fixtures, when they were installed, and the 􀃦ushand flow rates2) Do faucets shut off automatically?3) Is water metered for the building?4) Is there an irrigation system?5) Is it separately metered?6) Does the school have a full service or heatand-serve cafeteria?7) Does the cafeteria have a garbage disposal?8) Does the school have a swimming pool?Chlorine or salt?9) Is there currently a water management policy?10) How are leaking fixtures reported andmaintained?

"Making Water conservation a priority - how implementing water saving technologies can yield multiple benefits and savings by deciding to incorporate a water conservation strategy into a school design."
