Literacy

Environmental and Sustainability Literacy

Teaching students about sustainability and the environment gives them the tools they need to solve the global challenges we face now and in the future. Education that supports this type of literacy includes both curriculum and instructional
practices that are interdisciplinary, place-basedand rooted in the context that uniquely surroundseach student. This education impacts studentunderstanding and action.

Experiential Learning

Increasing students’ environmental knowledge while also employinginstructional practices that focus on interdisciplinary and place-basedproblem solving can influence behavior change toward sustainability.Students for whom the environment is a context for learning perform better
on measures of general academic performance. Successful green schools arebetter for students, teachers, and communities. They teach students how tolead a changing world, and they support student understanding by modellingsustainable behaviour through green operations and building practices.
Teachers at green schools can use the building as the basis for project-based,experiential learning. Green schools provide a clear opportunity to connectstudents with curricula in environmental and science technology engineering students with curricula in environmental and science technology engineeringand mathematics (STEM) education, and can serve as a tool for interactivelessons across all subjects. For example, maths students can track and chartutility cost savings, science students can analyse and compare the differencebetween eco-friendly and traditional cleaning products, and humanitiesstudents can debate the impacts communities have on their environments.
Every student can benefit from the opportunity for hands-on learning, and demonstrate the interconnectedness of the built environment and natural systems
